No surprises coming from me but imo a Katana 50 will see him way further along his journey than pretty much any of the other amps that you mentioned.

The funny thing is that I've always found that a "normal" guitar chorus pedal works much better with bass than a specifically bass tuned one. They just seem to help the bass cut through better.
