Re: Best sounding low watt high gain heads
I bought mine last week and the auction for the 50w ended 5 minutes ago. Keep your eyes peeled. The one today went for around $270 which is a crazy price.

Re: Best sounding low watt high gain heads
Laney AOR 30. It's the same circuit as the bigger (50w, 100w) amps but uses a smaller power transformer and 6v6 tubes (so it's actually around 22w). Which is incidentally a JCM800 circuit with an extra tube, so more gain. Also has more EQ options since the Marsdhall tonestack is laughably minimal. A...

Re: Guitar Setup Kit?
to setup any guitar you'd need: an 18" steel rule (doubles as straight edge and a depth gauge) set of hex keys (imperial and metric 1-5mm) Mini screwdrivers Socket set for tightening tuning pegs/jacks/nuts Soldering iron Steel fret guard Steel wool Grits of sandpaper If you're fancy you'd want ...

Re: Anyone had an amp die during shipping?
I received an amp last week that was literally wrapped in 1 layer of cling film. Works great!

Re: Guitar Setup Kit?
What a load of crap. It's $20 worth of tools for $90. I can see right off it doesn't include anything metric, only has a 6" straight edge, and is basically not going to do much towards a full setup and on any guitar that uses metric measurements (which is a great many of them). Pass it up, sour...

You need a multimeter, a crocodile clip, and a mini screwdriver.

Re: Amp Bias, hotter or colder?
It takes 5 minutes to set bias, amp techs would have you believe it's some voodoo magic but you get the numbers, turn a pot and you're done. Nothing to it.

Re: Amp Bias, hotter or colder?
It varies amp to amp.
Try this calculator:
https://robrobinette.com/Tube_Bias_Calculator.htm
You need the plate voltage which you measure from the tube pin(s), and the dissipation of the tubes. Then you can figure out a safe bias (in terms of tube life).

Re: Amp Bias, hotter or colder?
Most amps come cold biased from the factory. They might be sitting on the shop floor for a long time being tested so the tubes need to last a while. Everyone except Crate ships this way in my experience, who bias the tubes mightily hot. I keep my bias at around 60-70% but it depends on the amp... my...

Re: Convert your Les Paul Studio to a 56 Reissue
You should check out a guy called Mr Beef on that forum, he practically wrote the book on LP conversions and does some incredible stuff. He used to charge $400 for the pleasure of converting a studio into a standard, now it's around double that. Awesome stuff. I'm going to ignore all that foaming ho...

Re: How do you use the stand-by switch?
Just FYI that none of these methods discharge the voltage in the caps. The only way to do that is to drain them via grounding them elsewhere or wait a few years.
Don't just turn it off at the mains then poke around in there.

Re: Pink Floyd Experience - any good?
If you're in Auckland you should go to the Pink Floyd night at the Stardome planetarium where they play 2 Floyd albums back to back with their star show. Amazing stuff. Pitch black darkness, laser beams and shit, and galaxies wheeling past your eyeballs.

Re: Forums have been slow, how about a 'In the mail' thread?
Got a laney aor 30 in the mail via mainfreight. Still running stock tubes from 1987 which should be fun but I'm gonna recap it and do some basic mods to the tone stack while I'm in there.

Re: Get your GAS now, Rosewood restrictions from 2nd Jan
I emailed DOC, CITES, MPI, Customs about having my Les Paul shipped here form UK and got this reply: "Dear <redacted>, Dalbergia latifolia is listed on Appendix II of CITES. Over 35,000 species are covered by CITES and are listed in three different 'Appendices', depending on their conservation ...
