Re: Getting more headroom from an 18w

Ignoring for a moment the very sensible suggestions of external help i.e. mic, PA etc, and focusing on internal soluations: Extension cab helps those amps A LOT. A more efficient speaker will help too e.g. Celestion G12H etc. Converting to fixed bias and SS rectification will get you a tad more powe...

Pigtronix are releasing a power supply in March with no less than four 15V* outputs

A well-designed/spec'd single-ended amp such as the Univalve should have larger transformers than you might expect for a low-wattage amp; the OT will need to be an air-gapped design which automatically makes it larger than a typical low-wattage push-pull OT.

Re: This 100 watt 'big iron' thing. Let's talk more about that...

Thinking out loud here a bit. My dream amp would be 2 channels, slightly pushed tweed deluxe for my clean and driven plexi for my dirty channel. Somewhere around 20 watts. If it was to be built, would it be worth building with oversize transformers to help with lower volume response and 'fullness'?...

Re: NZ retailers and effects pedal power supplies

Apologies if this has seemed like a dig at The Amp Shop, not intended, maybe I was foolish to name the retailer when asked. Totally happy with the pedal (Pigtronix E2D - it's magnificent!) and the price was very sharp. It's just unfortunate that there were 2 hiccups with the purchase that I've no d...

Re: NZ retailers and effects pedal power supplies

The Amp Shop in Auckland, first time I've bought from them. I was peeved when I opened the box but had an adapter lying about and didn't really think about it again. However, about to pull the trigger on another "power supply included" pedal which got me thinking - if NZ sold pedals come ...

Re: Low gain pre-amp valve or turn down volume?

turning down guitar volume either takes treble or bass with it. Unless you've got emgs, in which case there's nothing to lose anyway. Right, sorry, thought you were referring to changing the preamp tubes. Yep, with typical passive p/u set up, no treble-bleed compensation means loss of highs, and tr...

Re: Low gain pre-amp valve or turn down volume?

And a drop off in either highs or lows, generally. :wtf: I've always been led to believe that to increase clean headroom in an amp,you would choose a low gain pre-amp valve/or valves depending on how many are fitted to the amp. In doing this the output volume of the amp decreases. I've been compari...

Re: Fender vs Matchless

I went from an AC15 to Tony's Ryan built Matchless DC15 / JCM800 two channel amp, and the matchless channel definitely just has something a bit more than the AC15 did, hard to pinpoint, but it's got more bass / mids and clarity :) I really don't think of the EF86 channel as being "Matchless&qu...
