John Butler Trio, Nelson
Went to the Nelson gig over the weekend to see John Butler Trio (also had Trinity Roots, Fly My Pretties, L.A.B) Just to say, aside from an iffy Hendrix/bluesy moment, John Butler Trio were brilliant. The live version of Oceans was excellent. A couple of banjo moments were killer. Worked the crowd w...

Re: Cabinet advice for my Vox mv50
I'd just keep a look out for a second hand 1x12 to go with it, $499 would get you something way better than that Vox 12" cab! I was thinking that too. According to Vox, cab is designed to match the MV50 - but I'm not sure how much of that is just Vox's way of getting you to buy their gear and ...

Cabinet advice for my Vox mv50
Last year I bought the little Vox MV50 Clean with the Vox BC108 cabinet. Really happy. But because we never sit still, should I: a. Buy another BC108 and run them together which would result in the full 50Watts. And only $149 extra. But small speakers (8 inch) b. Buy the larger BC112 - 12 inch speak...

Re: Stacking Overdrives - Do you do it?
I've never really had enough pedals to experiment with stacking. But recently I started doing some DIY ones. I first made a very simple single transistor distortion that is noisy and gritty and not that useable (think a ripped speaker cone :) ). Then I made a fuzz which is smooth and nice but wasn't...

Distortion pedals for clean amp - no good?
I read (somewhere...?) that a lot of distortion pedals (DS1, Rat et) sound best when in front of a slightly overdriven amp, and can be terrible in front of a really clean amp. And they recommended if using a really clean up to pair one up with a bit of an OD pedal. What are people's experience with ...

Re: How did you begin to learn guitar?
Dad had an acoustic which he hardly ever played - but he sounded great and I wanted a bit of that magic. I wanted lessons but wasn't allowed them until I worked through a beginner book of folk type songs myself - it started off with three string chords on the EBG strings only. After that I had lesso...

Re: A few pics from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland
That story about how Kim Deal joined the prices was hilarious. Thanks for sharing the pics There were some cool anecdotes about some of the gear. Like white left handed strat in the Jimi Hendrix collection - apparently Jimi bought it for Stephen Stills so he could see what it was like to play 'wron...

Hopefully they get a few gigs and some airplay. Definitely a professional sound. The recorded over at Tom Shihad Larkin's studio.jaxman16 wrote:Sounds awesome! Never heard of them, thanks for the recommendation.

Re: Service/setup
Yeh that's about right: I took two guitars so he could give them a good looking over, and it ended up being $75 for setup, intonation, neck/truss rod adjustment (I think), and replacing the output jack on one of them. Didn't need new strings or any fretwork though. Definitely money well spent! (Plu...
