Steve Vai in July!
"Return of the axe
Guitar hero and all-round show-off Steve Vai returns to New Zealand for two shows in July.
The virtuoso axeman, last here as part of the G3 guitar extravaganza with Joe Satriani and Steve Lukather in March last year, plays Wellington Town Hall on July 18 and Auckland's ASB Theatre on July 20.
With a career spanning three decades, eight albums - including last year's The Story of Light - and more than 15 million record sales, Vai is one of the masters of virtuoso guitar, playing alongside blokes like Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen.
On this current tour he will be joined by his four-piece band and play for more than two hours."

I'm not as much a fan of Steve's music, as his showmanship live. It's really a hilariously cheesy yet amazing thing to watch. Definitely worth seeing.sizzlingbadger wrote:I know he's good but why have I never liked his music

This, kind of. I'm more partial to Steve's music, but only to a point. Some of it really feels quite self indulgent and a bit pointless, but some of it's fantastic. I guess he's quite experimental in a lot of ways, and that's not always my bag. But live, he just seems to be having such a good time wizarding it up with his guitars and great musicians that it's a great experience. Plus it makes me feel like I'm 15 again...slash-ed wrote:I'm not as much a fan of Steve's music, as his showmanship live. It's really a hilariously cheesy yet amazing thing to watch. +1 on the showmanship. I think that if he had wanted he could have been a great athlete - a physico-kinetic genius. I saw him once in Brisbane.slash-ed wrote:I'm not as much a fan of Steve's music, as his showmanship live. It's really a hilariously cheesy yet amazing thing to watch. I am a fan of his musical highs, but I reckon that if he could try a different style it would be a little more interesting as he seems to be very much in a rut. I would love to see him do some country or bluegrass or blues (as opposed to G3 weedley blues).
Unfortunately he is playing in the wrong locations for me on this occasion.

He has a great stage presence, I wasn't sure how I was gonna feel about G3, my first time seeing him after 25 odd years of being a fan, but it was amazing, right from the get go I was captivated, so much better than DVD's I'd seen!!

Just go, and be enthralled by the effortlessness at which he can extract incredibly impossible and scintillatingly expressive music from a very difficult instrument.
I just hope they don't use the soundman from the Wellington G3 gig.

Re: Steve Vai in July!
Saw G3 last year in Wellington. Was a Vai fan years ago but not in the fan-boy realm of many 40 year old mean who were crying tears of joy as Vai took the stage.
If you are a casual fan or used to like him, I suggest you go. Vai is an absolute freak of a guitar player, and it's amazing to watch somebody with that much skill on an instrument, but also one with a unique "voice" on the instrument.
I'll be going!

Does he still have those big industrial fans underneath him?slash-ed wrote:I'm not as much a fan of Steve's music, as his showmanship live. It's really a hilariously cheesy yet amazing thing to watch. Definitely worth seeing.sizzlingbadger wrote:I know he's good but why have I never liked his music
