3 questions..
1. do you guys actually use that style of mic?
2. what's the 'style' called?
3. are they any good? (compared to the standard sm58 say)?

-had any major confusion issues with CHCH-based blues-rock band and all-round choice buggers The Dukes?

I stand to be corrected, but I think that mic is known as the "Big Elvis", a Shure 55C.

I dare say the auckland based band 'The Bleeders' would agree, they seem to use them in their video clips

Apparently they feedback alot live
