But you don't tend to play clean (which is the issue) amirite?
Oh yeah, guilty as charged yer honour.
Where I'm having the most fun (even if it's not very productive) is with the spacey effects, just shoegazing. That's kind of clean.

Doesn't that then just reduce the thing to a pre-amp modeller? I was more interested in how it sounded 'instead' of an amp. Sure, the cheap wine tastes pretty good if you mix just a little bit of it in with some really good wine, but the good wine still tastes better on its own.

Audiophiles would spend just as much on the headphone amp as the headphones to get a good sound, so we should probably do the same if we expect top quality sound.
While I had the HD Desktop (originally from BG) I found it perfect for my usage: Getting acceptable amp-like tones through headphones without expecting the world.
Was just wanting to try one temporarily as I didn't really need it. I would definitely go back and get another if I needed to do some recording.
The headphone amp part is not actually the issue- I've tried one going digital out and through studio converters into a reference quality headphone amp and the issue is still there. It's more to do with how the modelled chain translates to headphones. Ed is quite right- amp -> mic -> console -> headphones doesn't sound as good as amp -> room -> ears.
I think the headphones point is a good one though. If one is only using it with headphones, it's no good saying that it sounds awesome through an amp or PA. However, I'd also say that the jcm and Vox tones are absolute pants, which is odd, as the old GearBox with the Ux2 interface had awesome JCM tones. I'd also say the bass model is a bit flat as well.
Yeah, all good points. I guess when looking at the HD Desktop model in particular, it seems to be designed for headphone/bedroom applications - so maybe my expectation that it should work well in that regard isn't so misplaced. If I wanted to run into a PA, effects loop return etc - I would have got the HD500 floor model to stand up and dance around with. Or, I would run straight in and play loud.
I don't hate it by any means and I'm sure more tweaking can improve results - but we're not there yet IMO.
As an only for headphone practice tool tho' its fairly OTT, I use amplitube on my iphone for that, purely for recording tho' its understandable, would be interesting to try it thru some monitors

I spent a couple of hours playing a 500 thru studio monitors and found it usable but not inspiring. IIRC the Dr Z and /13 models impressed me most. The park/plexi in particular wasn't great. Stuff like the 800 wasn't either but that's been a longstanding problem. I like and use line 6 stuff but it was a no buy for me.
My trick for a while has been to use the amp farm models for writing at home. Not the stock amps, which broadly stink, but the expansion packs. I usually end up using the Jube, Cornford and uber (surprisingly good at low gain -better than the real amp) from the metal pack and stuff like the supro and the custom line 6 amps from the collector classic pack. Some of the expansion stuff is rough as well, like the XTC. But there's some totally fine stuff in there for my tastes.
As faras I can tell, the Kemper is a potential buy for me. I'm especially turned on by the idea of profiles of specific amps allowing collections of weird pawnshop amps and rarities, as well as that '1 in 20' good sounding JCM 800. I hear reports of a profile of a vintage AC30 cranked and profiled moments before it died. Fun!
But that's a different price bracket and form factor.

and this post has nothing to do with the fact i am going back to one of these i promise! hehehe
Totally, I'd have one in a heartbeat, but to replicate what I have with the HD500 it would cost about the same as our car, i.e. add a foot controller etc...
