Re: Roy Phillips...
Well, I really enjoyed the music - he ran through all the goodies and his patter between songs is funny and interesting; one story concerned his road manager in the 60's, a certain Reg Dwight....! His musicianship is superb and the guys who filled in for him on drums and bass were simply jaw-droppingly good... and they had only met Roy 2 days before the gig; just outstanding; makes a man want to drag out his synth and get that whole B3 vibe going again!!
The opening act, however, was just rank - some wanker called Kingsley-Jones telling jokes that you'd get at a 3rd rate rugby club do; the crowd started getting a little toe-y, actually - they were there to listen to music, not some half-arsed welsh dropkick whose routine went for about 35-40 minutes... which was 35-40 minutes too long!!
All was forgiven - not forgotten!! - when Roy and the Peddlers came onstage!!

Re: Roy Phillips...
He's a musical legend to me.
When I saw the Peddlers the second time, it was in a small pub setting and was nice & intimate (the first time was at the Bowl of Brooklands, which is a great venue, but no 'contact' with the band). Trevor Morais was the drummer then and he did an amazing drum solo, where he basically kept a left-hand roll going on the snare while he walked right around the kit banging on anything in sight. Bloody awesome drummer. We had several drinkies with them afterwards and a great time was had by all.
The Peddlers were always a musos band - musicians love them for their muiscal brilliance, but the great unwashed didn't really understand what it was all about.

He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

Yep, the SkyCity Theatre is just about right, size wise; I'd've loved to be a bit closer but then so would everyone else!! You didn't have to be a musician to groove along to 'Girlie'.... fabulous...

Re: Roy Phillips...
bugger I missed it - i'm in hospital getting a few things repaired - first of three, next few weeks i'm either gigging or in the bodyshop.
anyways - when i was a kid my mum used to do the flowers in the local methodist church. i used to go down with her and while she flowered I cranked the shit out of the church organ. ALL the peddlars songs, hang em high, girlie, time is tight etc etc remember the sound clip on tv with the train, was it the kingston flyer? and heaps of procal harum
i had a peddlars record and loved it - roy phillips was a god.
he had a restaurant up in paihia for years, don't know if he still does

Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.
