Queensrÿche - "American Soldier"

New album out now, for the faithful. It's a concept album about wartime experiences, and a few of the songs have voiceovers by returned soldiers which adds to the atmosphere on some and gets really annoying on others. The band's sound has gone back to the less technical, grungier vein of "Tribe" and "Hear In The Now Frontier", so if you're one of the five people in the world that dig those you'll probably dig this.

Geoff Tate is in fine voice, but there's a lot less of the high-piched stuff in his singing these days. Guitar duties are all handled by Michael Wilton, the other guy seems to have buggered off. No loss.

Is it worth a listen, I was a big Empire and Queen of the Ryche era...I was so hoping you were going to have some news that it sounds like those albums...
I had a dream last night, that everything I have got replaced with an exact replica.... (Steven Wright)

Nope, sounds pretty much nothing like the early stuff.

Yeah I have to disagree that Chris DeGarmo is 'no loss'. He was great Ithought. I was quite into them around the time of Empire, and had Operation Mindcrime live on DVD. Really used to like that. A bit of a 'Wall' rip-off, but still cool. Haven't listened to it in probably 15 years, no idea if I'd still like it.

There's been two other guitarists in the band since Chris DeGarmo left.

He came back as a guest-star and played on a couple of tracks on one of their later albums ("Tribe"?). Last I heard he's flying airliners.

The band definitely lost something when he left.

Ah right, so 'the other guy' you were referring to wasn't him? Sorry, I'm totally out of touch with anything Queensryche have done between Empire and the present day. Loved all that old stuff though.

Well I'm one of the five, so make of that what you will.

They did get pretty lukewarm-to-bad reviews those albums, mainly because they did a Metallica and changed their sound which is always displeasing to the "hardcore fanz".
