"We discuss the merits of "formulaic" songwriting - perhaps Kroeger's greatest crime. Or his greatest gift.

"Maybe it's formulaic for a reason. Maybe it's because every single other formula's been tried, but when you find the ones that seem to work, the ones that become hit songs, the reason they're hit songs is because people like them.

"The song sticks in their head, it infects them, affects them and then they want to go out and buy that piece of material and take it home with them. They need to hear it another 40 times just to sort of cleanse their soul of the whole thing. That's what songwriters want. That's what we're all searching for."

I also remember seeing an interview with Kroeger on tv one time where he was talking about how when "how you remind me" blew up he wasn't sure what made it such a big hit. He figured that if he found out which parts people responded to he could get lightning to strike twice so to speak - he asked a heap of people which parts of the song stuck in their head identified 3 parts and used that as his template for just about every other song. He was quite open about it.
