I've just listened through the album a few times; it's a really nice background album for me.
I too like Chino bringing the melody, it feels like his team sleep stuff has tweaked his approach a little.
I'm particularly into You've Seen the Butcher for its behemoth of a verse/intro riff, Beauty School, This Place is Death and Sextape.

As always I LOVE the Deftones sound combination; Massive tight kick, tangy spanky snare, low-in-the-mix cymbals, tight low bass, sandpaper guitar, and angry vocals on the edge of screaming but not quite making it.

Anyone have any tips as to how they got the kick, snare and bass sound on this new album?

Bass: lots of 'vintage' ampeg action, methinks.
'
Drums: he hit them hard

In other news, Chino's voice seems to sound really good live. If only Sergio Vega would stop his BVs...

I think his approach seems to be fewer sustained notes. The screaming sounds painful as fuck though!

More interesting things - what sounds like suck screams for the high stuff (don't think he used to do that so much?) and the synth doing some of the 'wailing'.

I like it when things sound good.

Synth is doing what it does on the album>? Or have you not noticed that before?

Deftones have consistently released good albums and thankfully it seems Chino is now trying to sing better live - im a big fan and have been for years, own all the albums etc, but must admit that they can be pretty shocking live sometimes (mainly Chino!). Of course it may well be awesome when you are actually there but the footage can be pretty humbling I imagine for such a top notch band!

I dunno man, they turned the Powerstation inside out when they played early 2000's no complaints while I was there anyway.

Chur bro, thats what I mean - when you're actually there at a performance that can over-ride any dodginess! Im more referring to live footage (and even their BDO 2002 set was pretty rough - I was there!)
Checkout the DVD they released of them in Hawaii - some of the live stuff is dreadful as in 'why release it?'

Dont get me wrong though, great band, 1 of my favourites even!

Yeah, true. I remember back in the day I had a bootleg vid of the 93? Metallica show and it was not as cool as I remembered the show to be.

Its like having your photo taken aye, I'll try and pull a mean pose when I'm out but end up looking like a fool many times haha... if I get to choose which pics make it to facebook... its usually the best ones.
