Natures's Best DVD

Post by Rog »

I just bought, brand new, from Trademe for $23 a DVD of Nature's Best.

I imagine everyone here knows the content by now - 60 Kiwi songs.

Since I lived through the times when each of these was released and I've met/played with some of the people involved, this is a real find for me.

I am totally loving it. In my opinion there has been and still is some brilliant Kiwi bands, most of whom have been underplayed on radio. This captures a whole bunch of them.

Rog recommends highly!

An interesting turn of events for me from watching this DVD: I used to actively dislike Dave Dobbyn's music. Now I've watched and listened more - I have to say - he's a real talent.

What did you dislike about Dobbyn? My mother hates him, for no particular reason, but I think he is one of this country's greater musical sons... Particularly with regard to that body of work he produced while off his face for about five or six straight years up to about 1984!!

I didn't like his voice and found his guitar work was strange.

Now I've learned, by listening, that his guitar work and his voice are just him and different isn't necessarily bad. That's just who he is.

However, I still draw the line at 'Loyal'. That's just one huge dirge to me - unlistenable.

I love heaps of Dobbyn's stuff. Out of Th' Dudes, DD Smash, and solo stuff, I definitely prefer DD Smash. I really like his voice too; it's so clear, and sounds beautiful doing those high notes (not like Loyal, I agree)

Incase anyone else wants it, the CD Store in New Market (inside the 277 mall) has a bunch of copies of that DVD in their bargain bin nice and cheap.
