Pickup advice - Bridge HB
Hi,
Had a decent spell on the weekend just jamming at home. ASH Aurum direct into the Bellbird, at home volumes, so the gain was dimed and the master was quite low. Neck pickup (SD Alnico II) with the volume rolled back sounded lovely, nice and fat and warm. Add a bit more volume for more break up, sounded great.
Flicking to the bridge HB was really harsh, confused midrange, too much trebble, quacky mids. Not really sure how to describe it, but I didnt like it.
Looking for advise on how to get more sparkle and less harshness from a bridge HB. Could lowering it down a little help? Look for another pickup maybe?
My favourite bridge HB sound came from one of Higainer's LPs. Think it had 57 classics with a coil split on it, and it sounded fantastic whether split or not split.
Cheers.

Yep, I'd say go for it, its free for a start and it can reduce some harshness.
Heres a good blog post on pickup heights

What is the bridge pickup now? Another SD Alnico II or something else?

I thought Slowie's Bellbird the other night liked single coils better, tbh.
(His home volume is somewhat different to my interpretation of home volume though)

Yes, worth venturing out into the countryside to crank that sucker! I must say it did sound bloody good at that volume. Will have to take my new Lonestar out there soon...

Nice one!
Yeah home volume for me is enough to annoy the mrs, but not enough to annoy the neighbours. I live on a postage stamp size section. Opportunities to crank my amps don't come often enough.

Firstly adjust your pickup heights.
If you don't get where you want to be, try this:

It's a great way to set up your amp, if you are having trouble balancing things between pickups

Yes, 57 classics in that LP.
Funny thing tho, they aren't my favourite pickup for a LP.
My go-to replacement LP pickups are Suhr Aldrich's by a country mile.
I've always found classics a bit on the meh/dull side, however they seem to work well in the SG.

That bridge pickup worked so well for me. The single coil sound was so good too, thats what impressed me so much - gigging I'd use that single coil bridge all day. Plays like an LP, sounds like a Tele, thats gold right there.higainer wrote:Yes, 57 classics in that LP.

A mate of mine has a lonestar single 12 combo...it sounds great with his C22 and Tele so I'm picking a great around amp.Conway wrote:Yes, worth venturing out into the countryside to crank that sucker!
