Gretsch 6120 Bridge Question

Post by Jay »

Why would one swap out the original bridge on a G6120 guitar (with Bigsby) for a TOM type one?

Is there anything inherently wrong with it?

intonation maybe? Sometimes these alu bigsby style bridges can sound a bit thin.

As old Gretsch bridges go, that's nice. Are you using a term? If I remember rightly, some of the older bridges don't have the same radius as the neck--by a wide margin. if that's not a problem, I'd keep it original.

Compton claims their design is superior. Any experience with one? Are they supporting proper intonation?

Yes, the Bigsby works well. I'll check the radius and perhaps try it again instead of the TOM.

Hell, I may even cut one from a bit of cow bone...

Compton's do look good, haven't tried though. I've used these Bigsby alu bridges before...I could never get them sounding good for my head-tone. Yet, I've heard sound real good with say a Dynasonic setup and a cranked Fender. Quite percussive and acoustic...to the detriment of sustain and depth.

I have tried the brass and the aluminium compton.
For the 6120 i'd probabl;y go with what ever matches your hardware, but if yuo can go brass, do. Quite lively, resonant and twangy.

Compton or Tru Arc bridges are great upgrades on those. Have had both, currently rolling with the Tru Arc
