Hi. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried modifying a guitar neck (from D shape to C shape)? Do you need a luthier for the work or can be DIY?

Cheers.

Curious about this as well. Not big on the ol’ U shape

I've done it twice. You need to be mindful of where the truss rod sits in the channel and what the plans are for refinishing afterwards.

I did it with a rasp to remove most of the meat then progressive grits of sandpaper up to 400, then redid the finish with Tru oil.

I got a luthier to do it (Gibson 50s profile to 60s profile)

I'd say if you have to ask, then get a luthier to do it.

I suppose luthier is the best way. I hope it won't cost much.

What's the neck? If it's bolt on you might be able to sell it and buy a replacement with the profile you want for less cost than getting a luthier to reshape.

Specs mention 'standard neck profile' - didn't tell if D or C-shape. It's a Framus D-Series guitar by the way.

Ive done it lots of times with fender necks. 80 grit makes short work of thinning down the thick areas, then start smothing once in about the right shape

D shape to C is not difficult. Rasps/files or coarse sandpaper on a block to remove the meat, then finer grits until it's smooth enough for a finish. Tru-oil or wipe-on poly are easy. Just don't remove any depth from the middle of the neck unless you 100% know exactly how deep the truss rod is. Or remove timber until you see the truss rod, and then hit life's rewind button.....

Bitta grain filler should do the trick.

Or a couple of layers of duct tape....
