Stripped screw holes

Post by Slowy »

Korina is a soft wood and both my strap button screws have stripped out.

Now I can think of several ways of doing this; PVA and match shavings, epoxy, drill and dowel, what I'm asking is what's the right way?

Whatever hole repair you use, at the end of the day, use a much longer (50mm+) proper wood screw (with smaller stem and larger thread).

The right way is the way that works.

It might be as simple as a bigger screw.

You can dip a toothpick in wood glue, jam it in, break it off, then use the existing screw.

You can do the same as above with as many toothpicks as you can fit in the hole.

Or you can drill it out, dowel it, and redrill.

They're all gonna work, just depends how arsed you can be. Personally I'm a fan of using the biggest screws I can get away with for strap buttons and never trust the skinny things they come with.

This, I often end up grinding the head of the screw down so it fits in mystrap locks.

Nothing wrong with toothpick fill for quick and dirty

I've done this too when they come with short screws that I want to swap out.

I'd drill, dowel, reinstall with longer, bigger screws

There's no point in doweling and drilling to just use bigger screws... just use the bigger screws right off the bat, they'll still have wood to bite into.
