lower output p90
Heya all
Anyone got a p90 with vintage lower output specs ?
The one in my Jnr turns out to be a bit to hot to handle when ive put it thru its paces.
Failing that has anyone tried glyns cool p90?
Cheers

Re: lower output p90
The hot p90 in the PRS SE I got from Slowy was too much for me, I swapped it out for Mr Glyns cool p90 and it was a glorious thing!

For reference, this guitar was distorting heavily with volume at 2 out of 10 on my a Plexi clone.

I’m blaming my aging ears. I can’t accept the shave off of treble with backing off the volume. Treble bleed mod in residence !
But yes that’s a thing
But why not modify a guitar when you modify a guitar right ?

I'm loving the "Vintage Vibe" underwound pickups I picked up here. I used them in that Mike C vid.

Same reasons here, I like pickups with vintage output so you can run them wide open and then add gain stages as requiredStrummersOfThunder wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 8:22 amI’m blaming my aging ears. I can’t accept the shave off of treble with backing off the volume. Treble bleed mod in residence !

Re: lower output p90
Is it worth looking at the pot values and the tapers? I know Gibson have made some strange decisions in the past with what they use.StrummersOfThunder wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 5:57 am Heya all

Re: lower output p90
Turn the volume down on the guitar and treble up on the amp. That is how P90's should be.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Re: lower output p90
Edit: I just remembered it has an aftermarket Tyson pickup, so maybe that is the issue. I was thinking of standard Gibson P90's which are very good.sizzlingbadger wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 9:27 am Turn the volume down on the guitar and treble up on the amp. That is how P90's should be.

I just find it interesting. All the vintage p90's I've played/own have been very consistent, and have been/are hot as balls. Like, just as spicy as a 16k JB and with a wider freq range. Even the pre '57's with long A3's. They're not overwound or anything, just a really powerful pickup, which I understand is mostly magnet(s) related. So much so I gather a lot of the pros don't run the volume above 7-8 (with a C2/10% taper pot (the pretty common Centralab of the time)) for general play. Quirky, but that's what you (should) get when you shell out $$$ for a holy grail (50's GT's, Jr's, and Specials), part of what makes them special, and presumably why you're shelling out the $$$. Maybe Gibson's RI P90's are more accurate than they're typically given credit for?
One thing I am pretty convinced on is pot taper. I recon the old CentraLab C2/10% taper is pretty important. At half way a 500k C2 will measure about 50k. They give you a lot of clean below 6ish. Lot of modern pots are 30%+/- taper - a lot of the "vintage correct" pots are 15-30% too - the typical complaint is it gets dirty too quick (i.e. like Rob said above).
Musings aside, does it do the volume and tone at half "acousticky" sound?
