My Ash (semi-) custom

Post by Tsuken »

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Went in today and had a look at my father's day guitar from Catherine. It's not quite ready (Ash has to do something with the neck angle, and then wire it all up), but damn it looks ready :D

Of course the pics don't do it justice; I am utterly blown away by this thing. :D

and just cos I can, I'll update the "overall progression" post I did in the other thread:

I thought I'd emphasise the progression of this guitar

When I first bought it ($350 from Harmony House in 1992) it was a fairly vile blue/purple (not a good purple, Rog; I like purple, but this was just wrong) copy of a Jackson dinky strat, thus:

Image

It's on the right of the pic. A friend and I are swapping the necks over between it and my Samick strat (that was the reason I bought the Rockson; to use the neck), and the neck from the Rockson is therefore barely visible on the Samick I'm holding on the left: a fairly standard-looking Jackson-style sharkfin inlay blah blah.

Then I decided to get rid of the 'orrid paint:

Image

While I was at it, I filed a couple of very very verrry budget bevels into the cutaways ... to make it cooler. Apparently.

Then I painted it, and you can see how unglossy I got it:

Image

:?

However, the paint was fairly strongly adherent to the body, as I found this year when I tried to strip it back myself. Here it is after I threw in the towel and gave it to Ash. (And it should be noted that the large very well-stripped area was done by Ash rather quickly when I asked him what wood it was).

Image

you can also see the Ibanez Wizard II neck I scored from Ash.

Image

And after Ash did a proper job with the bevels on the cutaways, stripped it back, and did a coat of sealer (?):

Then after some beautiful staining:

And now:

:D :D :D :D :D

A guitar worthy of a master like yourself. She's beautiful Tsuken.

Don'tcha talk England now? ;)

If you did mean all the holes, I shall explain them ... just for you ;)

There are three little holes for mini-toggles for Dan Armstrong's super-strat 12-position switching system; holes for a master volume, and a custom master tone multi-position rotary switch; another hole for a phase switch for the middle pickup, and the final hole for my "Bam Bam" switch, which disconnects all the other controls, and connects the bridge pickup directly to the output jack.

Keep the holes! I like that you can see through it.

No, I reckon it's going to be lovely when it's finished. You can bring it around to my place and wind it up to test for feedback and how well it performs at volume.
My neighbors will probably appreciate it more than my usual racket. ;)

That finish still looks like a Toffee Apple to me though. Yum... damn, my teeth ache just thinking about it.
