Fingerboard stain
Maybe this is one for Ash, but asny advice appreciated. I have an old acoustic I've put a new fingerboard on. Having finished the radius work etc I notice the rosewood is quie pink/brown. I'd like to stain it darker and I know StewMac does an oil stain (which cannot be exported)...but will any dark oil based stain do? What about good ole Placemakers wood stain? Cheers

Stain is bad. It rubs off eventually (or immediately if you're unlucky). Not all stains will work. Rumour has it, the SM stuff is saddle stain. Horsey like.

do a good search around the interweb...... I've heard it isn't uncommon for ebony to be stained as it can be quite patchy in colour....
adrian, what about bleaching wood to lighten it? I have a rosewood board that I'm not a huge fan of. I have tried chlorine with some success, but would like to go even lighter, any options?

Never works. The best you can expect is pink and seriously softened wood.willow13 wrote:adrian, what about bleaching wood to lighten it?

This finger board could be used to control oil spills...nice dark finish one day, pink rosewood the next! I guess that's why it's called rosewood huh!bluesgeek wrote:Just keep it oiled regularly, it should look fine
