but it looks to me like itunes needs me to install 'itunes' and I am about as interested in that as I am a rectal thermometer of liquid nitrogen (and I don't care HOW much fun you think that sounds)

I don't buy mp3's. I do buy CD's from the USA and rip them to the computer though!

Compared to what, illegaly downloading? Man, i Tunes sucks for artist. If you want to download music from a smaller artist, contact them directly and get it from them. They'll get all the money

Hey. that's a cool idea. Plus you get to swap emails with them and maybe get to know them a little.

Amazon won't let me download stuff because I'm in NZ. Still, CDs are so cheap in America, esp. the secondhand ones from Amazon. Even with postage, it's probably cheaper than downloading and you get all the artwork, etc. too.

I have long been amazed at how difficult it is to buy legal MP3s of anything but the most obvious tracks. When I was looking for some semi-obscure '80s and '90s tracks it was easy enough to find them on Amazon, but they wouldn't sell me any. The NZ based outfits didn't have them and the Russian Mafia 15c places aren't exacty trustworthy or legal. Scouring TM for CDs and ripping the MP3s myself seems like the only way sometimes.

Generally if I buy music these days I hunt it down on vinyl if it's available on that format. Then CD if vinyl is unavailable, seeming the mp3s are almost always downloadable somehow unless it's hell obscure.

I never have, and never will buy an MP3. I side with the crowd who go on about the 'packaging and artwork, blah blah blah' you get with vinyl records, etc. Plus there's nothing like hearing your fave albums on analogue goodness. A buddy and I are looking into building a few 100w mono/stereo poweramps for our hifi rigs when we can get the time. Going to look into doing a vinyl preamplifier too. Thinking KT88's for the poweramp, mwahahahaha!

Or just download them illegally in two seconds, and if you have moral quams with that then burn 5 dollars. Because that's how much bands are getting from you buying CDs from trademe

Seriously, if that's the situation with some bands and songs then illegally download them and give the money to charity or something
