I've had to educate every band I've been in about maj7 vs 7 chords. Some people can't handle them and play the relative minor it place of it.

I quite like a 6th as a hanging chord for an alternative ending.
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

I like 9's. The 9 to the 1 pull-off, hammer-on is also a beautiful thing. It can be hard and funky too with a minor. Real pretty.
