High Horses - Surf Song

Post by The Scarecrow »

Hi team.

This is the alt-country/pop'n'roll band I play for. Just in the throes of recording a live EP. Just got the latest mixes back and thought I'd share this one out. Still a work in progress, but feedback welcomed.

I'm playing lead guitar mostly - my rig is Fender Cyclone > Boss ME50 > Mini Recifier > Mesa 2x12. The singer was playing a Fender Strat > Hotcake > Blues DeVille.

Enjoy!

Reuben

I like it! Only listened on laptop speakers but will have another listen when I get in to the studio this morning. I like the organ playing more when it's more choppy/percussive- it sounds a bit busy in some of the breaks. That'd be my only criticism though.

It's got a 1970 Californian Stoner Hippy Jam feel to it. Very retro; Like!

Also like the tone of the organ; very Steppenwolf.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Thanks man, keys player is quite busy a lot of the time. There was a big focus in this song of him trying to get more 'lead' space and cut through. He's actually toned it down a bit live, which works.

Kinda cracks me up that the first part is pretty much inspired by your comment; it was originally written as a Beach Boys style song, but evolved a littler later into the 70's.

The last part with the slowdown is pretty much a homage to Sabbath's "Lonely Is The Word".... RIP Dio!

Indeed! Definitley not the Recto sound. Had it set in Vintage mode with gain about 1/3 and a clean booster, delay and an octave up on the lead.
