Sound Clip: Acoustic: Mic'd or Plugged in?
With my M-Audio Fast Track all set up and everything working well, this morning I had a go at recording a short bit of acoustic guitar, plugged in, and then mic'd up, to decide which was better.
It was night and day for me as to which one I liked more. But then I got my wife Sarah to have a listen and she was just as clear as me on which she liked... except it was the opposite clip to me.
I'm interested in which one you all think is a better sounding clip. It's of an early 2000's Taylor 214, with a K&K Pure Mini pickup. One of the clips is the Taylor plugged straight in to the Fast Track, and one of them is with the Taylor mic'd with an Audio Technica ATM41HE. Done in Garageband with zero effects.
Here is the clip...
I'll reveal which clip is which later on today, though I do think it's pretty obvious.

use them both with the second one louder and the first one with more verb and spread across the mix

Second one sounds like the mic, but I actually prefer the first clip!

I prefer the 2nd clip, sounds more "full". presuming thats the miced one?
Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

See my resurrected JCM thread!
Now that I can record I have a feeling you guys are going to get as sick of me posting clips as you were of me posting dithering threads.

I loathe what Piezo pickups do to the transients. Clip 1 sounds horrid. Give me a mic over acoustic pickup any day.

Like this idea! But clip 2 all the way.willow13 wrote:use them both with the second one louder and the first one with more verb and spread across the mix
You preferred #1 didn't you?
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

2nd clip by a long shot.
With my LTD AC10E I always record it plugged in, but it's a totally different guitar.
