Re: Who's that playing Bass?
not so sure on Jamerson
most people want to sound like him yes
Carol Kaye still says that is her on those tracks
and some stuff I thought was Jamerson was Babbitt
Rainey IMO does a mean Jamerson too
Brown, maybe, Chambers definitely. possibly Dave Holland, Ron Carter and Charlie Haden too. it's more 'personal' double bass but I have not listened to enough Jazz
as for Pino PB I've been mucking around with Paul Young's take on 'wherever I lay my hat'. I actually like the vocal.

Re: Who's that playing Bass?
yeah Jack Casady. big influence on Anthony Jackson who should have been on my list. AJ do not sound like anyone else that's for sure.
never really listened to Primus although I have read a few print interviews with the cat. he seems like he has his own thing going on.

Other than a lot of those already meantioned, standouts for me would be Chris Squire, Jack Bruce, Stanley Clarke, Louis Johnson and just for Rog, Gary Thain.
I didn't get where I am today by understanding humour.......

Re: Who's that playing Bass?
I borrowed "Tales from the Punchbowl" by Primus off Terexgeek
I think the like the drumming most. It's eccentric music or at least not what I am used to listening to.
def got PROG-Rush-Beefhart-Zappa thing which is too far out for me mostly.

The OP asked: what Bass Players can you identify from 'their sound'foal30 wrote:what Bass Players can you identify from 'their sound'
I reckon I can pick Marcus Miller and Peter Hook. Probably Entwistle and Graham.
anybody?
Are not most of us naming players here getting their 'style' and 'sounds' confused?
Much easier to identify a bass player by their style surely?

Re: Who's that playing Bass?
How does their style not come through in their sound? You mean style as in how they look?
Re: Who's that playing Bass?
+1 on Babbitt. He nails that stuff.foal30 wrote:not so sure on Jamerson

Still not sure he could play 'What's Going On' lying on his back though

No, what I was probably thinking of was 'tone' instead of 'sound'.thehenderson wrote:How does their style not come through in their sound? You mean style as in how they look?
It's easier to tell a guitar player by their 'tone' or 'sound' than is it a bass player.
No?
Maybe it is I who are confused.

Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke. etc...
Lots that have already been mentioned.
However, drumming wise. Dennis Chambers is usually easy to spot a mile away.

and a few of the others above, also: Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, Geddy Lee, Hooky obviously, Gerry McAvoy, Phil Lynott.... most of those are pretty distinctive.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Re: Who's that playing Bass?
Fieldy
Lemmy
Steve Harris
Justin Chancellor
Flea
All these guys stand out instantly for me, not only for the kind of music I listen to but mostly because they are so promenant in the mix. Unmistakenly present
The total opposite IMO would be John Paul Jones & John Deacon.
To me they have a very dull flat sound. Could be anyone playing with that kind of muffled bass tone.
Its not a critisism of their playing but its more to do with the sound I hear.
Their tone just seems to lack life.....almost the blanket over the speakers sound for me, as opposed to the top 5 list.
