Definitely. It's the "I can't believe it's not Larry Graham" bassline.foal30 wrote:"If you want me to stay"
is Rustee Allen on Bass
although he clearly listened to Graham play "Everyday People" in the way he mixes the length of his "8th notes".
push and pull indeed
I'm sure you're right (liner notes say so anyway) but not according to the Funk Brothers in "Standing in the shadows of Motown". They say Jamerson turned up, lay down on the floor and played the whole song on his back.foal30 wrote:Inner City Blues is Bob Babbitt not James Jamerson
I could very well have that arse-about-face but it's a cool story nonetheless

nah that's "What's Going On"
which is sort of regarded as a high point in the development of the instrument.
apparently he was cut as too to sort of rub it in
Willie Weeks
well worth investigating IMO
Donny Hathaway Live is sort of the apex, but "Young Americans"by David Bowie has some top playing too.
Bob de Leo of Stone Temple Pilots, particularly the "Tiny Music" album
Family Man Barrett on "Babylon by Bus" Bob Marley
Bruce Thomas on quite a bit of Elvis Costello's early stuff
Bruce Foxton of the Jam
Norman Watt-Roy, both for Ian Drury and his parts on FGTH debut

John Deacon from Queen seems to also be the perfect definition of what you're looking for.

Re: Recommend me some bass
Paul McCartney on Sgt Pepper pretty much wrote the book on melodic pop/rock bass IMO.
+1 to Willie Weeks, James Jamerson, Duck Dunn, Larry Graham.
Aimee Mann has written and played some great bass lines on her albums.
Check out what Brian Wilson wrote for the bass players on Pet Sounds!?! Outrageous inversions and substitutions by pop standards.

Big Bang Baby from de Leo.
And don't forget Walter Becker, who did a fine job of not sounding like a guitarist turned bass player on some Steely Dan tracks.

The De Leo Brothers are right up there on my list, although favs from Tiny Music would be 'Adhesive', and great bassline on 'trippin on a hole in a paper heart' .. great track. Even more impressive is that the drummer is credited as penning that toonash wrote: Yes and yes!
Big Bang Baby from de Leo.

+1. He's a very good bassist. People don't usually notice just how much bass there is on that classic Femmes' first album. Plus the acoustic thing, he's really amazing.foal30 wrote: Bryan Ritchie of the Violent Femmes
