Same as any instrument comrade.
Quality instrument
clear practice time with appropriate learning material
good instructor/tutor
High Grade material to listen to/cop
HONEST EARS
a simple starting point may be to use open strings as much as possible for the intonation thang.

They do something with their left hand... I think you're not meant to use your middle finger or something like that. I'm VERY vague on the the details.Kev77 wrote:I've switched to the dark side - double bass

I played double bass for 5 years. But i've sold it now. Was mainly jazz style plucked, but also a little bow to work on my intonation

Re: any double bass players?
I've played double bass in a Gypsy jazz/Gypsy folk/East European folk band and swing jazz/lounge ensemble, doghouse in a rockabilly/r 'n' r band, string-bass in an Irish pub-rock band and stand-up in a country/bluegrass band. Mostly pizz with a bit of arco...German bow. Good fun.
It was always a boost to see the punters take a second look when you pulled out that "big cello-thing" and started tuning up...they seemed to almost take you more seriously as a band and the music you played before they'd heard anything.
Excellent for cross-training for guitar...stamina and stretch. Still play it still to keep my hand in as a change to guitar but not gigging it anymore.

Re: any double bass players?
I've always wanted to play double bass - my friend's dad has been playing since I can remember - but I don't think I'd do too well without marked frets
Re: any double bass players?
I'll bet you would. How often do you actually look at your frets?
Country blues and acoustic lover.

You make a good pointJD wrote:I'll bet you would. How often do you actually look at your frets?
I dunno, I just assume that it would be totally different to playing my acoustic... would be great to hide behind though in those moments where you wish the stage would open up and swallow you!
