Re: Recommend me some bass
Don't know if it's your thing or not but since I picked up a bass I've really started enjoying more ska and reggae stuff, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff etc as well as the UK punky ska stuff. Simple but really groovy and definitely good for the stress levels...

Re: Recommend me some bass
It may not be bass guitar, but it's certainly bass. And extremely cool bass, too!
Always wanted to be in a band with a tube player, or to play it myself, perhaps.

Re: Recommend me some bass
look up the top 50 or most influencial bass lines. lots of them are already mentioned. stuff like under pressure from queen, keep it funky etc etc
im a fan of NIN type basslines. i also like stuff of the bassist who played on kevin max's imposter.
brooke's bassist is pretty rad, guy from welly?
check out esperanza spalding. she aint just a looker! her fingers do lots of talking too =)
p.s. i think foal has good taste!
p.p.s the p bass i got from you guys were amazing. tho my current pj may beat it. will do an AB back in malaysia.
p.p.p.s. expect payment for that ash body next week =) . finally!

Re: Recommend me some bass
I had a good listen to some Van Halen today and there was one song Ithought should get a mention here...
Unfortunately I can't remember which one it was. Youtube isn't helping. i just remember thinking, "that doesn't sound like Michael Anthony playing bass"!

Re: Recommend me some bass
For me, a great bassline is normally something that you hardly notice, but without which, the song would sound like something from American Idol.
There's so many great basslines already mentioned. I love it all and sometimes get all suprised hearing a great bottom line pop through unexpectantly. When I first heard Rancid I was very pleasantly surprised by the bass playing, for instance.
For 2 widely varying examples, listen to Van Morrison's Into the Mystic and Uriah Heep's Easy Living for ways the bass can totally make the song. There's so many songs like this, of course.

He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

Van Halen had Bass?
I thought they were just another '80s synth pop band.
George Murray on David Bowie's "Scary Monsters". some good feels here.

Re: Recommend me some bass
heh, no thanks
I self-righteously have denied myself from ever hearing the wall of thunder
sounds like Eddie has said no more too
as for Brothers Johnson being a staple of RTR
I'm less than convinced
as popular NZ Music History has
"Strawberry Letter#23" as the first genuine underground #1
I have no recollection of "Stomp" on any radio or TV
EWF I remember well, but not the BJ
anyway further proof of the genius of Quincey Jones. They don't make pop music like that anymore.

Re: Recommend me some bass
I had another listen to the album this morning and Right Now sounds like the one.... although it doesn't sound as impressive as it did yesterday in the car. Still... a bit more dynamic than Michael Anthony's usual thud-thud-thud-thud sound.Jenesis wrote:"You're No Good"?ash wrote:I had a good listen to some Van Halen today and there was one song Ithought should get a mention here...
