When I first heard Rancid, I was very impressed by Matt Freeman's bass work, in a genre where musicianship is not normally expected, nor experienced, he is a shining light, imo.

i was watching "pretty fly" on c4 the other day and it occured to me - the whole song is dissing those who pretend to be something they are not, yet rancid are a bunch of elderly dudes trying very hard to pretend they are teenagers.

pathos be thy name:)

***edit*** OMG!#$%!$#@%

matt and tim were both born in 1966 - its far worse than i had ever imagined. im not saying that rocking out at the age of 40 is in any way bad - i hope to be doing it myself in 4 years - what im bitching about is how silly guys my age look when trying to dress/tatoo/pierce like they are still 18.

so Punk needs authenticity more than other forms of "popular music"?

this is not too say I don't laugh at Punks...

um, fav rhythm sections

Watts/Wyman
Benjamen/Jamerson
Dunbar/Shakespear
Jackson/Dunn
Gadd/Rainey
Lovelle/Jemmott
Bland/Thompson

any section containing Anothny Jackson, Dennis Chambers, William Calhoun or Marcus Miller is likely to be happening.

Dylan - there's hope for ya yet, mate - I'm 58 and still gigging.

But - no tats, no 'tude - just an old fart enjoying still being able to do it.

Bruce Thomas

he played some pretty exciting Bass with Elvis Costello.
"pump it up!" is a mother
and "every day I write the book" sounds suspiciously like graphite goodness.

I think good basslines become more apparent with good songwriting, MR Costello is no slouch eh.
