Jazz bass with the tone hammer is pretty sweet. Just gotta be careful to not dial in too much bass as it'll muffle up in the mix. I'm still using my tone hammer, but only with my jazz bass. Thinking of changing things up tho. See how much $$$ I can spare
Yeah, they were Model J's. Kinda felt that it sounded like a Jazz bass trying hard to be a P but failing. The stock pups are better purely because they are unmistakably Jazz tones, and sound distinctly different from the Model J's.
With the Model J's and a series/parallel switch it sounded like a jack of trades, master of none kind of bass. If I only owned the Jazz I'd be pretty happy with that setup. I think Jazz basses respond the best to preamps.

If you're ever selling your Tonehammer on, give me a yell.

With the stock pickups now reinstalled, I'm certainly feeling a bout of Sootitis coming on.

Upgrade or Sell my Jazz?

I had no idea there was more than trebly punk styles or deep booooom when it came to bass tones.

Could you point me to a few songs with examples of what you see as great bass tones, bro?

It's my favorite personally, deep and growly.
The second Stingray vid is a 'Ray strung with flatwounds. Sounds awesome, but the superb pocket playing helps a lot too.

Indeed. Geddy Lee with Model J's through a VT Bass.

I can't get behind SFT love. I've had two of them and it is a magic fart box for me.

Yeah, sold it to Pakehendrix. Tone was AMAZING but it really was a two-man job to lift it anywhere. It was also a money sink for me so I was glad to get rid of it in the end.
I bought an Orange AD200b Mk3 instead and it's a lot lighter and sounds better too; incredible overdrive with a P Bass with Nickel rounds.

I'm sootying hard over the Jazz now that I took the Model J's out and put the stock ones back in but I still really want to turn a Stingray into a pre-Eb sounding one. I've built a 2 band EQ that sounds lovely, and I'm swapping the Model J's for a Nordie MM4.2 pickups which will give me the vintage sound. The problem with the Dual humbucker 'Rays is that the area under the control plate hasn't been routed and your standard pots don't have bushings long enough to reach through both the wood and the metal control plate so I can't use it.

The plan is to sell the jazz and get another Stingray but I'm not so sure about that idea.

Cool, we've connected again. I haven't relisted my Strat at this stage either. One thing is there's too many new ones for sale around the price I want for mine, but also I realised that it's been so long since I actually played a Jazzmaster, apart from a quick blat on Tubeswells one at the last Wellyfest, that I really don't know what I'm getting myself in for. All about me etc.

Lol, I now totally understand dithering, Cam.
It's weird having something that's really good that you like but is totally surplus to requirements and iIt sits perfectly on the line of 'keep it for a when you feel like a change of tone' and 'sell it to get the gold'. Bitches love changes of tone and gold.

I'm still listing it on TradeMe at a price that I would be happy getting but enough to put off bargain hunters.

Good god I love them. Wish I hadn't sold mine TBH. P-bass -> SFT -> DI or P-bas -> SFT -> Greenstone was pure joy. Had to have the gain down fairly low though.
