The Smiths.

there is a cover by Jeff Buckley I heard.
I think it's from "the Queen is Dead"

Andy Rourke sure had some tasty lines
I think "What difference does it make?" is probably my favorite.

J2 has been having a Paul Weller meltdown, heaps o' good Bass.

perhaps some of the pickup guru types can comment here, but it seems to me the difference in sixties fender compared to Ricky and Gibson is the multi pole pickups. Leo F was quoted as developing this to remove the "percussiveness" of the original Pbass pickup. I interpret this to suggest that the multi pole pickups are more compressed, therefore providong a stronger average transient.....and the Jazz is the result of shiftiing the pickup closer to or further from the bridge (or combining both)

btw I recently listened to a remastered "Smoke on the Water" a Ricky through a Marshall Major and 2 quads....very crunchy indeed......Chris Squires yes sounds were much cleaner (perhaps DI'd not miced)

great examples of Jazz bass is ELP "Pictures at an Exhibition" and of course Rush....

I prefer P basses to be clean and clunky
Pretty sure its a Jazz bass.

Jimmy Eat World are an example of a modern band with great P Bass tone.
Their album "Bleed American" has sexy tones.

busted some funk with the '76 at a club last night
direct to PA
no amp at all
still a heap of ass

Flats on a Precision is very important to check out.

cut, side, selection, track, song
floor, bottom line, base, bass

on playback it is like there is a sonic barrier of fundamental lowness.
I could be reading too much into this of course.
