Although the first time I can remember the "fuck yeah, rockstars!" sensation was an unidentified music video on Ready to Roll that was probably Def Leppard about 1986 or shortly thereafter.

Anything from the black album onwards is not really Metallica, you checked out their early stuff?
Yeah man, I've got most of their albums.
I know that's the consensus on their stuff, but I was about 11 or 12 when Load and Reload came out and they blew me away, so they have positive memories for me. I'm partial to some of their later stuff. No Leaf Clover was my favourite Metallica song for a long time.
It's been a long time since I was deeply into them though, and with some perspective I can see how Master of Puppets and their other 80's albums are better. But I still like the later stuff.

this isn't uncommon for people who got into them later on....I had a guy working for me who was 18 and he thought the old stuff was to busy as sounded shit compared to post black album ...I have always looked at it like its their band they can do what ever the hell they want and if I don't like it then I won't listen...but I have no right to "attack" them for what they are doing because it is THEIR band and they can do with it what they please. What I like about them is they don't give a shit about the haters and just keep doing what ever they want (see the lou reed thing)

My first guitar hero was the dude from Pseudo Echo with his white elite Strat on the Funky Town video. That's the first time I remember thinking I wanted to play electric guitar.

This and mine serve as reminders to how middle of the road rock radio was in NZ right through to the end of the 80s. I wouldn't be surprised if someone elses posts in with Huey Lewis' guitar player.
PS: solo done by a session guy.

Yeah, now that you mention it...
Perhaps not so much to do with guitar heroism, though

Rhythm guitar: Andy Taylor. Solo: Eddie Martinez.
Video shoot: Robert's wife, on set the whole time, watching the models like a hawk.
