Ray Wylie Hubbard.
His earlier albums I like more, though the later ones are better than most guys are putting out:
Delirium Tremolos (probably my fav)
Eternal and Lowdown (very bluesy)
Live at Cibolo Creek
and many others. He writes great lyrics and has players like Lloyd Maines and Gurf Morlix (who also has some interesting albums although he's a better producer/player than solo artist).
Lotsa guitars (acoustic and electric), plenty of slide, great lyrics. Country, blues, rock, roll, ......
Always been a fan of Steve Earle, his recent 'The Low Highway' is an excellent album.

Steve Earle is your man, bro. Great songs, bluesey and blue-grassy,country and ballsy rock n' roll all in one. And ANYTHING but derivative imho. The guy is the heir apparent of Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt.

check out 'The Messenger' by Matt Joe Gow and the Dead Leaves.
He's a kiwi who travelled round the world writing songs then settled in melbourne and started a band.
Unfortunately after this album they dropped the solo monicker and became the dead leaves and the sound sort of turned more into indie pop with alt/country leanings and the songs weren't as strong, I think Matt's out of the biz now and became a cop too bad, the messenger is a fantastic album.

Band of Horses? Infinite Arms is the only album of theirs that I've got, but it's really good. Quite soft music.
Nothing to see here.

Some good offerings here.
As a side, I posted the YouTube to The War on Drugs the other day. Try that for something different. ...I'm loving the Dylan esque vocals and cool 70s/80s effects .

I enjoyed all those vids. Does this mean I need to get me a Stetson?
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Damn! That's great!twangnsnarl wrote:Not sure if this is what you're looking for when you mention 'roots.' Whatever the case, Pokey Lafarge is pretty darn cool. Might be a bit clichéd for your tastes, but they're a bunch of really good musicians who seem to love what they're doing. Worth a listen, methinks.
This is probably a good introduction to him and the band.

The more recent stuff tastefully adds a mini horn section.

There are tons of videos on YouTube. I could spend hours linking really good ones. Spend some time checking them out, or get the albums. Well worth it.

What I think I'm really interested in is finding something country tinged, but with a bit more attitude and groove. The ideal would be something like a hybrid of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Pokey Lafarge, Wilco and Lucinda Williams.
