That was great! I've always liked that sort of thing. I'd love to be in a band doing that, whatever it's called.benderissimo wrote:Here's a dude who has been floating my boat recently:

Same song, but as a duet.

I didn't discover this until like the day after the show. I'd have loved to have gone.bbrunskill wrote:Pokey Lafarge is awesome, he did a great show here a month or two ago

Of all the terrible album productions that weighed down the 1980s, 'bring the family' is among the worst?otisredding wrote:Great playing but AWFUL production. Late 80's over slick at it's worst. I'd love to hear that album remixed sans all the digiverb and EQ. YMMV.Vince wrote:
But seriously, that "Bring The Family" album is marvelous. And it has "Lipstick Sunset" and "Have A Little Faith In Me", so you can't really lose, unless you really hated those Toyota ads.
You picked the wrong time to stop sniffing glue, Darren.
It's definitely a product of its time but compared to other records of the era it's not nearly as stinky as many.
Whatever you do don't go near his wannabe Elvis Costello phase. A linn drum hit might hospitalize you.

Oh, cool... so it's not just me that thought that, then? I went and had another listen to it, didn't think it was as bad as all that.Hot_Grits wrote:Of all the terrible album productions that weighed down the 1980s, 'bring the family' is among the worst?

I bought the remastered version and, while it's definitely a product of the time, it's not spoiled by it.Vince wrote:Oh, cool... so it's not just me that thought that, then? Nah, it's got The Big Snare but we're spared the synth washes. There's not many DX7-ish bell things or sequenced bass. People don't sound as if they're recording in an airplane hangar with every instrument 200 metres away and the log drum patch is conspicuously absent. Not too bad at all.benderissimo wrote:I bought the remastered version and, while it's definitely a product of the time, it's not spoiled by it.Vince wrote:Oh, cool... so it's not just me that thought that, then? Compare it to Springsteen albums of the same time esp. Tunnel of Love (from the same year)
Listen to Hiatt's "Learning How To Love You" compared to "Tougher Than The Rest", two songs with similar vocal styling and Hiatt's album's production sounds a lot less dated.

What's the general thought on Tony Joe White? I heard 'Polk Salad Annie' on BFM this morning and rather liked it.

I feel a bit like the potential for cheese is quite high, but I'll investigate further.
Bring the Family is a big hit here.

What I hear is Knopfler-esqe Strat tones and Chris Rea-ish vocals. This is criminally unfair but there it is. Lake Placid Blues is fun to play though.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

BTW: should that be "eddikat me" or "learn me"?

Where does Alexi Murdoch fit in the description of Alt Country or Roots or Folk or Folk Pop or?

Probably not the best example of his work, but I love this song so it was the first I listened to you YT today...

Larrivee 00 Acoustic. FAV Strat for electric. Ibanez SDGR5 for bass. Push for Ableton. When not doing that, 3D CAD for tunnels...

I have a good idea about what alt country is but the term roots confuses me sometimes (even though I use it a lot). People tend to have tonnes of different ideas about what it means.
