family & friends music

Post by Kloppsta »

A post I made in my pickup install help thread got me thinking about friends & family who aren’t on the forum but are muso’s in their own right.
Figured it would be cool to have a thread for sharing their work around and being the proud son that I am Ill start with my old man’s work. He is a pianist in his spare time and imho (yes I am biased) is wonderfully talented.
He is not trained in theory and he has one of the best “ears” of anyone I have ever met.

He recorded a self-funded instrumental album called “Not Long Ago” with Mike McCarthy @ Manuka Studios back in 2009.

His tunes are here - http://www.reverbnation.com/dennisklopper

My personal fav is “Arctic Dreams” :)

GO DAD!! haha

Cool thread bro, I will give your dad's playing a listen tonight!

I must give props to my late uncle William Uhrle, who passed away in August this year at 51. He drummed from his teens and was the primary instigator to my interest in musicianship at a young age. Although he didn't achieve stardom in the generic sense, he played in dozens of bands over the years, though I most notably recall him in a new-wave group called Bloody Tourists in the late 80's/early 90's which seemed to gig regularly in Auckland.

I remember him bashing out Hello Sailor and Midnight Oil covers in the rumpus room at my folks place in the early 80's when he lived with us and seeing him go through a pair of drumsticks every night - even when arthritis took hold of him in more recent years, he could still hit harder than guys half his age. In later years, he mellowed and played drums in worship groups at his church and had a stint at a casino house band.

I have some of his old recordings which I'll post up, fans of the Dunedin sound will probably dig.

Condolences bro! Your uncle sounds like he was a good dude and a solid influence in your life. We all need those! How long have you been in bands now bro? Must be getting on now! History repeating itself? :) keen to hear his tunes when you dig them out!

yeah, I think they played it live on triple JJJ or something, it was way before the song went big from memory (well long before I knew the song anyway)

He certainly does. We gig together occasionally. I think that mic is a cheap MXL V67. It's not bad, but tends to be on the noisy side. One of these days I'm going to record his EP. He hates recording so he never bothers.
