Best intro to...

Post by Vince »

Yesterday I was round at the neighbours, who are from Napier and listen to The Sounds FM a lot and I was amazed to discover that they had no idea who Satriani is. Same for Vai and YJM.

So I was thinking of getting some CDs for them (they're very nice to us).

What would be a good intro to Satch, Vai and YJM?

I thought of Surfing With The Alien, but it sounds a little dated. Then again, that might not matter. I'm quite fond of Strange Beautiful Music but I'm not terribly familiar with Satriani's (many) albums.

Passion and Warfare?

Arpeggios From Hell? I thought of Marching Out but the production sounds a bit shit these days. On the positive side, YJMs albums are much of a muchness and his style hasn't changed much since then.

Suggestions?
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.

My first intro to Satriani was Time Machine, which had a great selection of tunes.

Crystal Planet by Satch still gets regular rotation at my house. I'd say P&W or Alien Love Secrets for Vai. Never really listened to the focking fury so can't help you there.
Loving it so far

for YJM at his best then any of the first 3 albums (rising force, marching out and trilogy) but if your friends are more into "songs" then odyssey would be the way to go, its just a bit easier on the ear in a "pop" way
If Less is More Then Just Think How Much More More would be

for Vai, what about Seventh Songs....this is Vai s most melodic stuff in one disc...

Fire Garden or the Vai album might fill that niche too - having words in the songs makes them more accessible it seems, like willow alluded to above.

You said they're nice to you. Why would you inflict this on them? ;-)

I'd say Rising Force for YJM. Passion & Warfare for Vai. And SRV for Satriani. :-)
