I liked it, right up to the douchebags in the audience wearing headphones and nodding along.

In all seriousness though- very cool!

Though this is a guitar comparison, I really like the guy's playing. Not w**k at all:

Yeah. It's my old band (our bass player moved away) playing in a friend's back yard for the first time after almost a year off. I'm stunned at how good it sounds given that it's just fine on a little handheld recorder.

Cool playing. Great thread.
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

That... is NOT what I expected. I was expecting more of a black metal sound than late-Earth meets Massive Attack meets Stephane Grapelli.

Listened to a bit of Django. Never heard much of any other jazz dudes. I'd heard of Charlie Christian before, but chiefly as the guy who the archtop pickup system is named after.

("Drone Metal: it's not just holding one note for thirty minutes!")

I always thought that Miles had it over the other famous bebop and cool jazz guys from about the time of "Kind of Blue" because of his gentle, yes emotive and melodic style. I also love "Bitches Brew". The other guy who used emotion and power beautifully was John Coltrane.

Berklee does free peer assessed online courses in Jazz improvisation and other topics on Coursera. If you want to get a certificate at the end you have to fork out about $50, but you don't have to get a cert if you don't want it. For free music education and feedback from five random anonymous critics per assignment, you can't go wrong.

http://www.coursera.org/

I got about halfway through the most recent one, and then an unexpected diversion stopped me from doing anymore, so I'm hoping to pick it up again next time they do it.

You have to post your assignments on Soundcloud. It was very helpful, but quite technically demanding if you're working full-time, which leaves not much time to study properly. Here's me attempting to sound like a real jazz musician:

and my more fusion oriented assignments in the Intro to Ableton Live course which I did concurrently (sorry no guitars "What in the World" one, but you can find one on the one after that "South Island Black Beech Forest":

Cheers

Mike
