Off the radar guitarists

Post by MattH »

A thread for those guys that aren't super technical, but have something about them.

My nomination for today is Dave Rawlings & Gillian Welch - together. Those dissonant scales are nuts. Caught them earlier this year and the interplay between them was astounding. Sounded like one guitar at times.

The late Eddy Shaver, son of and guitarist for Billy Joe Shaver. Eddy could play real country, blues, rock, slide etc. Done in by an overdose, so bloody tragic. Such a good player. There is some live stuff on youtube. Unsung hero in my view.

Is Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule and the Allman Brothers off the radar enough? Makes Bonamassa look like b-grade imitator.

And the late Allen Woody of Gov't Mule on Bass, makes me want to play bass.
He died in 2000, same year as Eddy Shaver, and drug related as well.

Other things considered as well, 2000 was a shit year!

Sean Costello just made it on to my radar. Love his phrasing. Within a blues context he's melodic and fresh sounding.

Lol. Well I thought the Don't dream cover was more tasteful than super technical, but I'll agree his solos over loops show he's got chops out of most of our leagues...

Another two thumbs for Sean Costello

Andy McKee - creative, original acoustic
Henrik Freischlader - cool funk/blues
Jesse Davey - god of big fat tone, nails SRV style
Joey Landreth - amazing slide player
Antonio Muñoz Fernández - close to being on par with Paco De Lucia
Simon McBride - Glorious tone, Rory Gallagher inspired vocals

Another thumbs up for Welch and Rawlings, Kid Andersen for a fresh go at yer blues and Blake Mills for just being amazing without a hint of flash.

Kid Anderson rocks - Darren W raves about him. Blake Mills is just a different breed. Could listen to him all day. Props to Jim Keltner was his drum work on the last record too.

Jeff Lynne
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
