I was thinking Slash and probably Kirk Hammett inspired a heap of people to play (similar to John Mayer), but they didn't bring anything new to the table like Jimi and EVH did.

Slash definitely influential in a pop culture sense, but nobody deserves ‘pentatonic noodler’ more...

Slash and John Mayer are decades apart, have to admit I was inspired by Kirk Hammett to pick up the guitar... Metallica were my favourite band in 1989 when I started playing.... I'm quite confident I was a better player then, could happily play a bunch of his solos... ye gods...

I have looked into this John Mayer popularity thing. I don't get it. The guy can play well but the music has a Coke Zero or Decaf thing about it. Something just is not there. It's too nice and safe.

Frampton had tasty chops. Check out the second solo in Feel Like I Do off Comes Alive. Nice modal work in dorian. I am not a huge fan, but playing solos in 1977 he was up there with Page and Clapton.

I agree. Even without the whammy his sounds and riffs should put him in this category.
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

From the perspective of a guitar playing front man who was incredibly popular and got kids into playing guitar i'm gonna chuck in Kurt Cobain. He even had a world wide number 1 hit AND ushered in a new phase of popular music.
