Unexpected Team

Post by foal30 »

I had Joni Mitchell album "Chalk mark in a rain storm" on.
It has Wendy and Lisa singing on it, they are lovely, incredibly talented musicians, in fact poptastic goodness.

this is probably no surprise to anyone, but two tracks along I hear Billy Idol! I'm going cool..then this guitar comes a roaring, sure enough Steve Stevens.

I guess I supposed Joni Mitchell and Steve Stevens as "unlikely" session mates. Who's got some other oddball ones for a bit of different listening?

Dave Gilmour playing on the Arcadia album always struck me as unusual.

That song Dancin' Clown needs more Stevens histrionics.

Roger Waters and Eddie Van Halen... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqk_e_1kRco
Maybe would've been better if they let Eddie sing it, lol

I'm not sure they ever released any singles, but Tommy Chong (of Cheech and Chong Fame) used to play in a band called Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, which for a short time included a rather good young guitarist named Jimi Hendrix.

Apparently the band did quite well until they changed their name at Chongs suggestion to "Four Niggers and a Chink"... it went downhill from there.

Two odd pairings for me were:

Carpenters - Goodbye to Love - with Tony Peluso (?) playing a rather tasty fuzz solo.

Michael Jackson - Beat It - with a totally unexpected and imo boody good solo from Eddie Van Halen.
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

Apparently the other members of Van Halen didn't want Ed to do sessions for anyone else. Eddie thought he could do 'Beat It' on the quiet because iit was just going to be an obscure track on some R n B album that the band would never hear :D
