Previous Peter Stephen build

Post by Ears »

Mostly for Ash's interest as he asked for these a while ago. I have just discovered how to reduce pic size enough for uploading in this place.
Walnut on Tasmanian Blackwood.
Duncan and Kinman PUps.
All ebony knobs etc
Imitation Ivory binding (might use boxwood or similar if I did it again as I discovered I prefer woods to synthetics), wouldn't change anything else though.

Some of the result.
Note the rod for the strap, have two alternatives, normal and extended for better posture and less shoulder ache.
Both PUps now have ebony surrounds, not shown.

Your workshop is based in Hamilton?

Hi Darcy,
I've recently moved to Hamilton, but Peter has a (huge) workshop in Lyttelton Christchurch where I was based over past decade.. Works by himself with a helper for repairs etc.
Although I've had only had solid bodies made, Peter IMO produces unbelievably good jazz style archtops. If I were to say he had a forte that would be it, he might or might not agree. He also makes double basses, classical guitars (he trained in Spain and Germany for this), flamenco, steel-string, multistring basses, mandolins etc - the whole works. The only stringed instrument I haven't (yet) seen him produce is a violin. I've known him 24 years and have never seen him produce a guitar to the same pattern, all are unique. He has some pretty well known clients. But you have to be prepared to wait, sometimes up to two years, so not for the impatient.

Nice, clean work inside and out. His approach reflects his training, lots of old-school stuff in evidence. My training is quite different and so my approach is more from the engineered angle than his crafted angle. Nice to see I'm not the only one using a proper pin-router the way god (Leo) intended 8)

Before the metallic spray goes on I suppose I could take a rasp to it make it a fair bit pointier too Rog, but then I might have to worry about you wanting to borrow it all the time.
