NMD!

Post by The Scarecrow »

New Microphone Day!

Picked up one of these bad boys yesterday (early b-day gift from my lady) after having gassed after a retro-looking mic lately since watching too much live Incubus footage and seeing Brandon Boyd (man-crush) looking boss with one.

I've traditionally used an SM58 for the last few years and had no issue with it, but I often have found I have that I have wanted to have a larger target area to sing 'into' given the fact I'm often trying to balance guitar and vocals and move my head to check my fret placement on some songs that are a bit more technical. Hence the vintage style mic has been appealing.

Being a relatively cheap mass-produced mic made in China, I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised on how clear and notably loud it sounded, especially compared with the SM58. Being that it picks up sound in all directions, there's a few tings of feedback , but not noticeable over the band. I think the SM58 is probably going to sound better for recordings but the ISK is definitely going to be a good live mic.

Definitely looks the part too.

That looks cool. Do you look anything like Sinatra? :)

Is the casing metal or plastic? What did it set you back?

Cool. I wonder how close it is in sound to the original Shure one...

I really like the sound of them (Shure 55S) on horns.

Bump, I couldn't resist getting one either in the end, just looked too cool. http://sixstringsamurai.co.nz/2012/05/07/new-mic-day/

Now, if my band EVER gets together for a practice again, I'll find out what it sounds like in a mix
