NGD: Robin Avalon Standard out, Robin Avalon Classic in.
I've been GASsing for a Les Paul Special for such a long time but knew that it wouldn't be as good as the Blonde Robin Avalon I had so I (quite foolishly) looking for a Robin Avalon Sport (their version of a LP Special). Unfortunately that awakened the GAS monster for an altogether different Avalon. A drawn out PM exchange with Crushing Day (who was the NZ rep for Robin before they stopped production) and a quick and painless sale to Pete_Currie later and this magnificent beast arrived at my place.
(NZG obligatory fence present in reflection on the back).
And here she is with her slightly tubbier older sister.
This was a bit of a gamble for me because, while it wasn't much to look at, the Blonde Robin is an amazing guitar to play. I knew I'd miss it but I thought it was worth the risk for this one.
The risk definitely payed off. The photos almost don't do the flame justice. It's stunning. Unplugged it's loud and rings like a bell. Sustain that Nigel Tufnel would get a woody over. The pickups are Rio Grande- Buffalo in the neck (more classic output) and BBQ in the bridge (vintage hot) and they suit this beasty down to the ground. I was a little unsure of the BBQ before I heard them as I never really came to terms with the Genuine Texas that was in the bridge of my other ones but it rules. It sounds huge, unmistakably LP but also a bit like a tele on 'roids. The neck on this thing is farken huge but surprisingly easy on the hands. It doesn't get in the way at all and if anything adds to the resonance. You can actually feel the notes ringing through the neck. I'll post some tone clips when I get a chance but suffice to say I don't think I'll be changing the pups anytime soon (might get Ash to mod them so I can add coil taps at some point but that'd be all).

Main differences between this and the Blonde one:
This one is Mahogany with "presentation grade" flamed Maple top. Blondie was chambered Swamp Ash. This one also has a bit more bling going on- exposed faux binding on the body, binding on the body and headstock. This one's neck is huge and the whole thing weighs considerably more than Blondie (which was extremely light).

Ben, that looks splendtastic.
Would you have any time/interest in doing a guest spot for Six-String Samurai on these? Or perhaps on some other item of cool gear you have? PM me if so

Thanks!
@ TMG 03 - At the time they had a fairly long waiting list too. Not quite sure what happened. Guess they couldn't keep up with demand without blowing costs out.

That has to be the nicest fence shot I have ever seen.

Saw this on the weekend when Ben came over and it's an absolute stunner. The thick maple cap is incredible and the mahogany back is just beautiful - looks like one slab, you can't see any join. Nice touch that instead of a binding, the edge is a strip of the maple top without the brown burst. And the neck is super chunky. Very very tasty indeed.
