Re: NGD: Gibson SG Standard
Thanks chaps, very pleased with it.
From what I've read, the 2012 models have the 490/498 pickups from stock. 2013 and onwards got the 57 Classics which I dig. Will see how they sound at practise on Sunday; haven't had a chance to plug her in yet.

Yep you could, then you lose any perceived sustain advantage....GrantB wrote:Very nice! You can of course just raise the stop tail to deal with the break angle.
Great score. SGs are so rewarding to play.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

'13 was really close to a 61ri, small guard, 57 classic pickups,. 14 is the same but with the weird looking 12th fret inlay. '15 was a very different beast as everyone knows. '16 pretty much went back to what you have there i think and '17 is a mash up with a small guard but the same neck heal as yours, not sure what pickups it has.
They went for so long without changing and then changed heaps in a short time period.

Re: NGD: Gibson SG Standard
I do like the small guard, but that little insert of guard between the end of the fretboard and neck pickup really annoys me.
I wrapped the bridge last night, which was easier said than done as I hadn't taken into account having less string to work with lol. Seems a bit slinkier and rings out a bit more acoustically anyway. I'll give the pickups a chance, can't help but look around for replacements though

Did ya screw the tailpiece right down to the body?

Yeah, apparently it increases sustain cause the mass of the tailpiece is now tight to the wood.
It'll also improve the break angle on the strings so they won't jump out of shallow saddles

They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

Re: NGD: Gibson SG Standard
Cool as, cheers for the tip
The saddles have some pretty hefty grooves in them actually. I'll leave it until MrB casts his more educated eye over it anyway; not sure if it needs a new set or not. There seems to be some scuffing over the fretboard too on closer inspection, almost like someone's rubbed light sandpaper over it.

What we need is a full blown interweb debate on top wrapping. It's never been had before.

Haha - yep. Gibson must be sitting there - "we know that it sustains longer and sounds better if were to put the strings on a different way. but we just don't want to, let the people find out for themselves"GrantB wrote:What we need is a full blown interweb debate on top wrapping. Don't you know: If the strings don't feed through the body, you're not even in the game.Delayman wrote:Haha - yep. Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Re: NGD: Gibson SG Standard
I'd quite like an SG with P90's.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
