So I strolled into the local Rock shop with the intention of spending no more than 600 on an acoustic.
It helps that the New Plymouth manager is an acoustic wizard and knows his stuff.
Told him my budget and the first guitar he handed me was this:

Sat down and had a play, 3 chords in and I was puzzled. How does a $500 guitar sound so good? My old martin didn't sound this good, along with any of the acoustics that have fell into my lap over the years.
This thing resonates like you wouldn't believe!
Construction is solid and playability is great.
I think the cedar solid top is the reason here.
My bandmate was with me and picked up a sub 2k Talyor to compare. Didn't come close.
Makes me wonder how good the pro series Taks are.
New Takamine day

Solid top?
The body image (with binding etc) and neck looks an awful lot like the larrivee I had years ago.
Quite happily pay $500 for something that plays as well as that.
