NLPD: '79 Silverburst
The first Norlin I've got. I was GASing for a Silverburst since a while but there isn't a lot of good choices out there. They only started making Silverburst Customs again sporadically around 2007 and went richlite not long after. Maple neck VS Richlite, had to pick the lesser of 2 evils haha. At least it's not a pancake and not as heavy as I expected. The neck is quite thin and most of the finish are gone, plays really fast with the bare maple.
It had lots of gunk all over it. Got rid of a lot of them with damp microfibre and lots of elbow grease. Grant recommended the Virtuoso Cleaner which removed the rest. Still smells horrible after that, so I wrapped it in a blanket with packs of activated carbon for a few days. Doesn't smell so bad now. The original case still stinks and only has 2 latches intact. Will get a Gator or SKB soon.
The neck pickup is a T Top which sounds lovely. Someone replaced the bridge pickup with a neck version of Duncan 59 at some point, I replaced that with a Lace Deathbucker which is a lot closer to my liking.
Overall I still prefer my '90 LPC (and my R9 obviously) but this has a lot of character. Also with the 3pc maple neck and volute I probably don't have to worry about a headstock break haha.

Fuck yes... as well as looking cool these are nostalgia machines for sad Tool fanboys like me. Awesome.
New ones don't green either i don't think, so you made the right choice
If you do any clips with the deathbucker let me know, in pickup choice mode at the moment

Nice, I like the maple necks and volute, much stronger.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Depending on what you're looking for, the Lace Alumitones are quite refined sounding. Bitey higher mids but the treble are quite smooth if you use 250k pots like the manual says.sirvill wrote:If you do any clips with the deathbucker let me know, in pickup choice mode at the moment
It's the surface clear coat turning yellow so the final colour depends on how the colour underneath adds up. The silver finish looks green with yellow on top but with the white inlay it'd just look yellow.Kris wrote:ive already expressed my horror at the colour but funnily i reckon its mean on the headstock-almost sepia like? killer stuff.

Re: NLPD: '79 Silverburst
Found out last weekend that it has 100k tone pots! I thought the guitar was just inherently dark since it's on the heavier side. Thought about getting another Tone Lounge solderless harness for it but realised it's easier to simply desolder the tone pots, so I can keep the original pots in there.

Thank you sir, this is useful information... the goldtop is so god damn bright it’s almost comical. Maybe lower value pots will be on the list.

Have you thought about trying a different headstock?Single coil wrote:Thank you sir, this is useful information... the goldtop is so god damn bright it’s almost comical. Maybe lower value pots will be on the list.

Re: NLPD: '79 Silverburst
Or just wire a resistor in parallel to the tone pot to make it lower value in total.Single coil wrote:Thank you sir, this is useful information... the goldtop is so god damn bright it’s almost comical. Maybe lower value pots will be on the list.
