That's a brilliant tip, and one I had completely forgotten about. In my youth (in the 1980s) I used to make add on devices for my Atari 8-bit computers that involved a lot of soldering directly to chip legs and other delicate components, my mum got me some clamps like the above from the hospital and there were brilliant for holding stuff and like you say worked amazing well as heat sinks when used carefully
