You need to do a blind A/B comparison so we can judge the difference for ourselves.

Mike, yours isn't the same circuit as the orange one is it? Might have to ship that one down as well.

I purchased (fully built) the clone KoT that codedog has and I built the orange one that you have. But they are both supposed to be absolute clones of the Analog.Man KoT. I think it might come down to the components (particularly the clipping diodes). More so, they are both supposed to have the correct diodes although there are counterfeits for sale - how would one ever know? The other aspect in all components is the tolerance, which can cause 2 identical pedals (even Analog.Man KoTs) to sound slightly different. You'd likely need Eric Johnson's ears to tell though!

Yup, that's why even the real thing comes with trim pots to adjust for variability in components. The Thomann guy did a video about comparison between a KoT he bought years ago and his recent purchase. He had to tweak the trim pots so the external knobs sound the same when set in the same positions. Can't hunt down the video just now.

The tolerance of the components do play a part in terms of how two idential pedals can vary. Depending on the type of resistors used, the tolerance can range between 1% and 5%. For capacitors, they can be up to 20%. Pots are also usually 20%.

So depending on where these components are used in the circuit, it might mean a bit more or a bit less gain. The pedal could be a bit brighter or a bit darker too.

I read somewhere that Analogman has started using 1N4148 diodes in place of the MA856 diodes. So there can't be much mojo in those diodes.

Had a chance to give it a whirl today, and some ham-fisted comparison with MikeC's 68Pedals King Of Clone.

Unfortunately I couldn't remember which side of Mike's was set to high gain. I picked the sides that were closest, my red (right) side and his yellow (left) side. Biggest differences were mids. The clone sounds thin noticeably thinner. Some may say "open" perhaps? Not sure. There may be a trim pot for this but I haven't looked. The clone may be a touch less touch sensitive but that's very nitpicky.

As for the real thing, I love the yellow side, which I chose to be a higher gain option. The red side is a bit dark for my taste. I ended up cranking the tone to about 3 o'clock. Both sides are very punchy, which is the main point of difference between the clone and the real thing.
