At the school where I work the computers all have Cubase LE on them (because it came free with something). I frickin HATE it. Some of you may disagree, but I think it is the most poorly designed, unintuitive piece of crap program ever thought of.

I want to see if I can get the school to buy something that is a bit easier and logical to use. Ultimately, I'd like to get a set of Macs with Garageband or Logic, but I doubt that's going to happen.

What can you guys recommend? It must...

-Be a reasonable price and come in education packs.
-Support rewire (we have Reason).
- Have onboard effects.
-But above all, be easy to use

Midi is not essential since we have Reason.

Are there any good open source ones? Nothing piques the boss' interest like the word "free"...

Rewire connects two or more programs (that support it) together so that they work in synch.

Try Reaper good program for the price. Maybe an Maudio Protoolz pack?

Audacity is great for free.. excellent even... but the buck kinda stops with the 'free' part.

Logic good but a lil over hyped in my experience.

Try Cubase SX ... way better than LE but if you are looking for intuitive Abelton Live may be a go.

Just a personal opinion but I wouldn't get too fussy with Re wire capabilities espesh with Reason.

Hang out on KVR audio for a bit. there are open source apps from budding devs coming up all the time, I've grabbed heaps of never to be seen again gems from there.

I saw this trailer for a new product called Record from Propellerhead, I don't know about pricing but it might be something you'd be interested in looking at?

Audacity. Fuck rewire

It's all very well to say "fuck rewire" but we do a lot on Reason and since programs like Audacity don't do midi, it's pretty essential to have it.

Sty, yeah I've been looking at "Record." I might download the demo and have a play with it.

My opinion:
If you approach recording as a musician: Logic.
If you approach recording as an engineer: Pro Tools.

That said both applications are almost the same thing these days. It doesn't really matter what software you use, just pick one and get fast at it.

Logic is Mac only.

Protools is way too expensive to set up on 20 machines!
