Copyrighting your music?

Post by nztim »

Who here has done it?

Would you recommend it?

How do you do it?

These are my questions, my band is starting to get noticed and we are just trying to protect ourselves, any advice on the matter?

Intellectual Copyright exists right from when you have written a song. There is no process of applying for "copyright" on your music - it is there automatically. You'd only head to APRA if you wanted to register with them to receive royalties on sales of your music.

Actually, if you need any info regarding the law and your music, best person to hit up is Dave Mclaughlin: http://www.mclaughlinlaw.co.nz/about-us ... McLaughlin

nmp89 is correct but there are other things you can do. Make a recording of the song(s), dump / burn it to a disk and mail it to yourself. That way you have a postmarked copy of the original. Makes great proof the recording is yours. Also keep any written material, perhaps trying scanning it and emailing to yourself.

Protecting your own IP is important but don't make it so no one else gets to hear it the song coz your afraid it might get stolen. The world needs to hear it. :congrats:
