My brother has been playing a Tele for a while now but has confessed he's still a strat man. He's already swapped everything on his Tele for strat parts. The body is the only part left that is still Tele. Surprisingly it still sounds like a Tele! Just goes to show how important the body is to the overall sound.
Albert Collins is my favourite Tele player. Hendrix is my favourite Strat player.

A 2 pup std Tele. By the time it's got a trem, a middle pup, and ribcage and forearm cutaways it's hardly a Tele any more.TMG 03 wrote:I suppose the next question is which model Tele or Strat.
After all there is 1000 diferent combinations from Fender these days.
I played my friend's Suhr Tele in Wgtn a coupla weeks ago - gorgeous guitar, so light, lively and responsive (and expensive). Hard to get a bad sound out of it, mind you I didn't play any radiohead songs
this one's special, this is the ultimate, after this i'll never need another amp, EVER...

well, mij ,mic, mik, mim , mia, models all make standard teles.
do you want rosewood or maple.......
Ash or Alder.
Big frets, little frets.
Brass saddles or modern.
the list goes on.
You don't need to even go near a trem or humbuckers and you still get as many different types just on the base models.

I say tele. I played stratocasters for over a decade, and recently I found I hadn't played my strat (apart from some studio work) for about eighteen months. So I sold it. I'm bound to get another one at some point, but somehow over the last three years I've become a tele player.
For me I find teles are a lot more work (perhaps don't be dumb like me and take ages before you get a jumbo refret) than strats, but they offer you much more dynamic control than any other guitar once you learn to work them. There's something about the significantly smaller routed cavities on a tele compared to a strat that cuts down on overtones and makes them both better able to cut through a dense mix AND be played at a whisper. I love the fact that I can really hear the sound of my hands when I play a tele.
The other thing with strats is they are so iconic and heavily used that it's difficult to carve out much of an original sound on one. The notch positions in particular have become such a cliche that for the most part I can't bear to hear them, let alone use them. I love the neck pickup sound on a strat, but it's difficult for me to not lapse into SRV/Hendrix territory, and god knows there are enough knuckleheads out there doing impressions of those guys already...
The only thing I miss about the strat is the wang bar. A tele that had a wang bar and somehow kept it's tone would be a real fun time for me.
